Old Glossop Bell Ringers
Our church is proud to be home to the Old Glossop Bell Ringers
All Saints Parish church has an active band of bell ringers, of all ages and abilities. If you are
a visiting ringer, or are interested in learning more about the bells and tower, please contact
our Tower Captain (Andrew Fearnley via contact us), or visit us at the start of a practice
night.
The bells of Glossop feature prominently in the church records. Since the tower was rebuilt
in 1854, there are eight bells—the heaviest (the ‘tenor’) weighing 870kg. The bells were
rehung in 1880 and recast in 1923 by Gillet and Johnson of Croydon.
Our bells are rung for both religious and secular occasions, and still are today. In recent
years, we have rung to open the Old Glossop Christmas market, in support of COP27, as well
as for death of the Duke of Edinburgh, and throughout period of national mourning
following the death of Queen Elizabeth II.
The ringers are also responsible for winding the church clock. The present one was the gift
of Daniel Wood of Moorfield in 1883.
The tower is a member of the Derby Diocesan Association of bell ringers, and we post up-to-
date news about our ringing on the Old Glossop Bells Facebook page here.
The bells are rung from 10-10.25am for the Sunday morning service. We offer ringing in
celebration of weddings, and toll the tenor bell for funerals. You can request the bells be
rung for your wedding day when making the booking with the church, and we are also
delighted to welcome couples into our tower at one of our practices before your ceremony.
We practice on Thursday evenings 7.30pm-8.30pm, and we welcome visiting bell ringers, or
complete novices.
